The Big Snowies, one of Montana’s “island ranges”, soar to well over 8,000 feet in central Montana. Approximately 120,000 acres in the Big Snowies are designated as roadless or wilderness study areas, and numerous ice caves dot the range as well. On clear days, backcountry visitors savor expansive views toward Canada to the north, and the Absaroka and Beartooth ranges of Greater Yellowstone to the south. This late June photo was taken looking north toward Lewistown and the Judith Mountains.
