The Nez Perce called the area near Lewis and Clark Pass “The Road to the Buffalo Trail”, although Crow, Blackfeet, Salish, Kootenai and other tribes also crossed over the mountains here to hunt bison on the plains. Tread lightly and respectfully in this unique, well-preserved landscape, which has changed very little since North America’s earliest human inhabitants first started using the area over 10,000 years ago.
