The primitive, narrow, winding Skalkaho Highway opens from summer to early fall, traveling over the Sapphire Range from just south of Hamilton to near Philipsburg, Montana. Skalkaho Falls is one of many accessible natural attractions along this less-traveled road, which was built in the 1920s to connect mining and agricultural communities on opposite sides of the Sapphires, and follows travel routes once heavily used by Native Americans.
