Fifteen-mile long Zion Canyon, in places over half a mile deep, is still being carved by the Virgin River. Towering, harder to erode cliffs of Navajo Sandstone predominate at higher elevations, while far below the Virgin River continues to chart its unruly course as it has for eons. From March through November, park visitors must ride shuttle buses to access Zion Canyon points of interest and hiking trailheads. The nearby gateway town of Springdale, Utah offers free public transportation connecting with the park service shuttle, making for a more enjoyable and safer Zion experience for all who come here.
