Originally designated as Mukuntuweap National Monument by President Taft in 1909, the Paiute Native American name was largely unpopular with more recent Mormon arrivals. By 1919 Mukuntuweap was enlarged and rededicated as Zion National Park, with just under 2,000 people visiting that year. Today, Zion is the nation’s third most popular park, with 4.5 million annual visitors, yet hiking less popular trails even a short distance leads you away from frontcountry crowds.
