In the heart of Big Bend National Park lies the Chisos Basin, at an elevation of 5,400 feet.
The basin and surrounding Chisos Mountains are relatively young (formed 38 to 32 million years ago) and of volcanic origin, covering about 40 square miles along the Rio Grande River in southwestern Texas. The highest mountain in the range and park is Emory Peak at 7,825 feet.
Established in 1944, Big Bend protects over 1,200 square miles of the Chihuahuan Desert. An international birding and stargazing hotspot, its intact and interconnected mountain, desert and riparian ecosystems provide refuge for an abundant number of plant and animal species.
Compared to most of the park, the Chisos Basin and Range provides a welcome, often much cooler respite from scorching temperatures common to lower desert elevations nearly year round.
