The Klamath River empties into a tidal estuary on the Pacific Ocean near Requa, California in an area shared by the Yurok Indian Reservation and Redwood National and State Parks.

The most important river south of the Columbia for salmon, steelhead and rainbow trout, its drainage basin covers about 16.000 square miles. After the removal of four hydroelectric dams in 2023 and 2024, chinook salmon and other anadromous fish species are returning to places along the Klamath where they have not been seen for over a century.
