To Montanans, “North Fork” refers to the valley of the North Fork of the Flathead River, and the entire wild region bordering Glacier National Park on the west and extending into British Columbia, Canada.
The 150 -mile river, part of the Columbia River drainage, provides the main inflow for Montana’s beloved Flathead Lake, and remains a stronghold for threatened bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout species,
Today, environmental threats to watershed health include overcutting of timber in Canada, invasive non-native lake trout arriving via Flathead Lake, and the deleterious effects of climate change on snowpack, run off and stream flow.
Thankfully as of 2014, the North Fork Watershed Protection Act prohibited new mineral leasing in Canada and the U.S, but the area merits more stringent, visionary levels of protection and conservation.
