This photo was taken near Steamboat Point one Memorial Day weekend. The ice, which can cover the lake for five months, had broken up only a few days earlier, and prevailing winds had brought huge chunks of it to Yellowstone Lake’s northern shore. Steamboat Point is named for the numerous steam vents, or fumaroles, that are found in the area.
