Great blue herons (Ardea herodias) overwinter in much of the Northern Rockies wherever there is open water. In warmer months they tend to be more omnivorous, eating frogs, insects, rodents, baby birds, and snakes. This photo was taken along the Clark Fork River in downtown Missoula, where a great blue heron patiently waited to catch unwary fish for an afternoon meal.
