The Outer Banks refers to a 200-mile stretch of barrier islands hugging North Carolina’s Atlantic coast. It remains a relatively rugged place compared to other mid-Atlantic beach destinations, with Cape Hatteras National Seashore protecting 70 miles from Bodie to Ocracoke Island from further development.  Here the ocean’s wildness and vastness are palpable, especially from October into April, when you can pretty much have and enjoy the place to yourself!
