Lower Emerald Pool is a 1.2 mile out and back Zion National Park hike. A rough, steep and occasionally paved trail leads to a year-round source of water and an ephemeral desert waterfall that I was fortunate to catch on a sunny spring day.
From Lower Emerald Pool, some visitors continue along steeper trails to reach Middle and Upper Emerald pools, making the total out and back hiking distance about 2.5 miles. Swimming and wading are prohibited in these and other backcountry pools, as they are vital for wildlife that live in or frequent the area.
