Erik and I were thrilled to witness the desert mariposa lily (Calochortus kennedyi) blooming at Death Valley’s higher elevations in spring 2015. These hardy flowers range from northern Mexico to U.S. southwest deserts, and vary in color from yellow to red to orange. Look for them among stands of pinyon pine and juniper trees, and more open areas where creosote predominates. One of my favorite all-time flower photos, I took this image near Dante’s View in Death Valley National Park.
